BBQ Tour Stop #4: Bixby, OKMay 11, 2010
Chris and I headed down to familiar territory and the Bixby BBQ’N Music Festival. We had competed at this event last year on one of our few “off” weekends so we already knew that this was a fantastic event.
The folks in Oklahoma sure know how to make people feel welcome. Last year in Ponca City, we were presented with a proclamation that announced the Great American BBQ Tour Day. Here in Bixby, they had a special newspaper insert printed in addition to promoting the BBQ tour in the event flyer, on banners and even on the event t-shirts. In talking with Buster and some of the other Rotary committee members, the addition of the BBQ Tour helped increase sponsors and awareness that this contest was one of the best in the country!
As we pulled into Washington Irving Park, we noticed a big piece of twisted steel on display in the park. We later found out that this was a beam from the World Trade Center. The good old Oklahoma winds greeted us upon arrival also and blew everything that was not tied down.
While half the park is filled with cooking teams, the other half has music, inflatables for the kids and family entertainment. On Saturday, the event sells sampling plates for people to taste championship BBQ. People were still pulling on-site after the BBQ competition was completed to take in the entertainment on a beautiful Saturday evening!
There were 94 teams vying for the championship including some of the traveling teams like Quau, Pellet Envy, Twin Oaks, Joe BBQ and Smokin’ Triggers along with some of the Oklahoma teams like Butchers BBQ and Buffalos BBQ. We really liked some of the local teams who came out to promote their local business and community like 3 Guys Smokin’, Boys Can Smoke and Jakes Place who ended up as People’s Choice Champions. Pigsicle BBQ even came down from Canada to compete! As teams loaded in, Bill with Blues Hog BBQ loaded in behind the tour trailer with his new addition – Flo the Mastiff.
At awards on Saturday, a couple funny things happened. First, there was a team call that confused most of the crowd – Little Pony Town. Someone had crossed out Pig and replaced Pony. I guess Scot with Little Pig Town was knocked down by a horse sometime Friday night. He was OK and the crowd really laughed up what could have been a much worse outcome. The other thing was Donny with Buffalo’s BBQ, who got 3 calls and would not show a smile, even with Miss Bixby right there beside him for pictures. It wasn’t until he got the Reserve Grand Champion call did a smile cross his face… and the crowd went WILD!! Mike and Beth with Quau were crowned Grand Champion by 18 points and took home a couple of the hand painted Champion plates, a Joe BBQ fire pit and since they cook on Kingsford, the big $1,000 check for the Kingsford Points Chase!
