Kingsford announces inaugural barbeque champion
October 7, 2010KANSAS CITY, Mo. – One competitive barbeque team took home an unprecedented prize at this weekend’s 31st Annual American Royal.
Quau, a competitive barbeque team from Illinois, received a check for $25,000 and major bragging rights on Saturday when they took home the championship in the first-ever Kingsford Point Chase.
“We want to congratulate Quau for their above par performance in the Kingsford Points Chase,” Laura Brooks, Associate Marketing Manager at Kingsford Charcoal, said. “When we started this competition, we wanted to honor the teams who participated in the Kansas City Barbecue Society’s events and cooked with Kingsford.”
The Kingsford Points Chase included 17 competitions, 15 of which were part of the KCBS Great American BBQ Tour. Quau participated in a Kingsford Points Chase event every weekend during the competition, taking home the top honor in six of the events. Each individual event paid the winner $1,000 in prize money.
In order to qualify for the Kingsford Points Chase, competitors must have cooked at least 75 percent of their meat using Kingsford Charcoal.
“The majority of teams who have won our events have cooked with Kingsford Charcoal,” Mike Peters, tour manager for the Great American BBQ Tour, said.
Overall, Quau took home $31,000 in prize money from the Kingsford Points Chase.
