2012 Tour Stop #19 - The American Royal

October 5, 2012

Since The American Royal is so close to home for Christine and me, we usually schedule a retail stop on the Wednesday afternoon prior to the event to kill two birds with one stone. This year, we loaded into one of the local Sam’s Clubs® to dish out samples of Weber® Sauces and Seasonings and Castle Wood Reserve® meats and cheeses. This Sam’s Club® was also responsible for the American Royal onsite store and staffed the Sam’s Club® tent next to our trailer. Lucky for us, it was the same fantastic group of folks as last year!

Saturday’s chill didn't keep the crowds from lining up to sample the Weber® seasoned Smithfield® "rolled" ribs straight off the Big Green Egg®! Saturday was also a big day for the BBQ Hall of Fame with the induction of Johnny Trigg, “the Grandfather of BBQ,” Henry Ford for his invention of charcoal and Guy Fieri.

Christine and I had the chance to see the last part of the Invitational awards and were so happy to hear the names of friends along with some new fresh new teams getting calls at one of the biggest and toughest fields on the BBQ circuit!

QUAU took first in Chicken, Bayou Boogie got the call for Ribs, B & B BBQ and Catering won Pork and our buddies at Hog Tide Bar-B-Que won Brisket. That first place brisket call helped Hog Tide Bar-B-Que win third place overall and Iowa's Smokey D's BBQ celebrated their wedding anniversary with a Reserve Grand call. The last call of the day - the American Royal crown and cape, a huge, heavy butcher block trophy and a big old check - went to Big Poppa Smokers!

With Sunday closed to the general public, Christine and I were able to walk around and see The American Royal in its glory before we headed to the Open awards ceremony. “The Dark Side” still maintained carnage of the parties from Friday night. Surprisingly, in the daylight, I still did not know how someone could find their way to their intended party in the dark.

The Smoking Triggers site had quite the commotion going on when we passed by. Johnny Trigg had Guy Fieri and the Motley Que teammates (along with 20 others) snapping pictures and having a grand time. On their way back to their cook site, Guy was gracious enough to sign a picture Christine and I had taken along with him at the "Jack" a couple of years before.

Leading up to awards, it was awesome to watch the Boy Scout color guard bringing in the flags and watch people stand in honor of the national anthem being sung. It was great that BBQ teams with scouts in their family made up the color guard! How cool was that?!

It is always exciting to watch the crowd and see peoples’ reactions when they get calls to collect their hard gotten gains. Out of 525 entries, Smoking Joe Barber Q won Chicken, Shake 'n Bake BBQ won Ribs, Spicewine Ironworks won Pork and Big T'z Q Cru continued their brisket domination with a first place brisket win! Texas Pepper Jelly placed 5th overall while Big T'z Q Cru brisket win helped him place 4th overall. Smokey D's Wannabees did fantastic with a 3rd place win. QUAU won Reserve Grand and team Shiggin and Grinnin won Grand Champion.
