Men at Pork brings home the bacon in Amelia IslandAugust 28, 2013
A single bite of bacon has the tendency to send taste buds in to a dizzying feeding frenzy. Never being satisfied with just the one bite, the taste of bacon has quickly become an obsession. Wright® Brand Bacon is fully aware of this bacon-obsessed population and is rewarding six teams at six KCBS events with an extra cash bonus for wooing the judges with the best competitive bacon dish.
Wright Brand Bacon opened its Destination: Bacon Domination contest season down in sunny Florida at the Great Southern Tailgate Cook-off in Amelia Island. Forty-four teams signed up to receive their two free packages of Applewood bacon, of which they turned in their hopeful contest submissions. On the line? A first place prize check of $500 plus a $1000 travel stipend and an entry to compete at the Bacon World Championship at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas. If the bacon dishes aren’t enough to make one drool, the prize pack certainly is!
The Amelia Island event saw box after box of tantalizing bacon dishes being turned in with everything from macaroni and cheese to stuffed jalapenos to pig candy and more! With the final forkful down and nothing left but sweet memories of those unforgettable bacon flavors, Men at Pork was announced as the first place winner for the day. Men at Pork submitted a Bacon Cream Cheese Brownie, which received a perfect 180 from the judges.
“I would say this is the biggest win,” said Jeff Gebhardt, pitmaster for Men at Pork. Men at Pork has been on the competition circuit for approximately four years now. Gebhardt pointed to Marcia, Men at Pork team member, as being the dessert professional.
“She used to have her own dessert and wedding cake business, and her creativity inspired us to go with a bacon cream cheese brownie,” detailed Gebhardt. “It was just a knock out. We thought we had a real chance, she turned it in, and by golly, it brought the bacon home.”
On Wright Brand Bacon specifically, Marcia and Gebhardt found it hard to compare the meatier cut to anything else.
“Oh, I like it. I mean, I like any bacon, but this is good!” said Marcia.
Men at Pork was largely speechless about their big win, but they were certainly able to convey their excitement to now go on to compete in Las Vegas amongst some of the best cooks in the world.
