IO Team Report: I’m pleased to report that the IOTeam is starting the year off with a busy first quarter schedule that includes classes and contests in three different areas outside the US borders.
The second week of January, the Lohman’s will rep a sanctioned contest in Tyrol, Italy in the Southern Alps. This event will be held at a ski chalet with extreme temperatures at -40 degrees at night, 4800 ft. on the side of a mountain. To date we have 24 teams competing with 28 CBJ’s in the jury. This contest will also host two other potential contest organizers from Italy and the Czech Republic who will attend to observe the event.
We return from the Italian contest in time to meet the rest of the IOTeam for a two week trip to Australia where we will do several CBJ and Cooking classes for cookers and judges who will be competing and judging in the Queen Victoria Market for a three day period. This contest has been hampered by a space problem in the location which forced us to limit the number of teams that can compete. We initially had 151 apply for the CBJ class and over 139 in the cooking class.
After our return from Australia, the IOTeam gets a few weeks at home before the Lohman’s leave for San Juan, Puerto Rico for the third year sanctioned contest. This event has gotten bigger, bigger and better each year and the organizers Mike Compton and Alex Garcia have done an excellent job of promoting KCBS in the Carribean. Mike and Alex are also the organizers on the Nassau, Bahamas contest and working on several other events in the Carribean.
Since our last report we have received a sanctioning request for a new contest, our first in Austria with Karl Helmut as the organizer. Karl has represented Austria at The Jack for many years and is well known as a talented chef in his country. The IOTeam is excited and looking forward to working with Karl and his staff in bringing KCBS to Austria.

Philanthropy Committee Report
Dave Compton: All of the nominations are in for both the Gary Wells and Carolyn Wells awards. For the first time this was all done electronically and everything seemed to go very smoothly. I've forwarded all of the nominations to Carolyn for her opinion and should hear back from her before the Board meeting this month - if there's any discussion needed on these awards we can deal with that during Executive Session.
Right now we are planning on using the same criteria / requirements as last year for the Grants in Aid and Charitable Grants programs with only the dates being changed. For the Charitable Grants we propose an opening date of February 1, 2015 at 12:01 am and a closing date of April 30, 2015 at 11:59 pm. For the Grants in Aid we propose an opening date of February 1, 2015 at 12:01 am and a closing date of April 4, 2015 at 11:59 pm. All times are to be Central Standard time.
We are planning on having the new electronic application programs up and running, hopefully by the first of the year or very shortly thereafter, and everything can be done paperless.
I ask that the Board accept this report.
Regional Representation Committee
Randy Bigler: No Report.
Candy Weaver: In light of prior issues with determining the start and end of a contest for team infractions, the following addition to the 2015 rules is proposed: I move to accept this change.
CAUSES FOR DISQUALIFICATION & EVICTION of a team, its members and/or guests: A cook team is responsible jointly and severally for its head cook, its team members and its guests.
a. Excessive use of alcoholic beverages or public intoxication with a disturbance.
b. Serving alcoholic beverages to the general public.
c. Use of illegal controlled substances.
d. Foul, abusive, or unacceptable language or any language causing a disturbance.
e. Excessive noise, including but not limited to that generated from speakers, such as radios, CD players, TVs, public address systems or amplifying equipment, will not be allowed during quiet time, designated to start at 11:00 p.m. on contest nights and will last until 7:00 a.m. unless otherwise determined by the event.
f. Fighting and/or disorderly conduct.
g. Theft, dishonesty, cheating, use of prohibited meats, or any act involving moral turpitude.
h. Use of gas or other auxiliary heat sources inside the cooking device.
i. Violation of any of the KCBS Cook’s Rules above, save and except #9 – 13.
For the purpose of this rule, a contest's duration is deemed from 9:00 am the day prior to the awards until the end of the awards announcements.
Mike Peters: Explanation - In sitting in on the CBJ committee meeting, in the early days, KCBS required a 30 question test prior to an individual being confirmed as a CBJ. There was no recollection as to why the test was eliminated but with the variance in judging it is important to help bring the standards back to the forefront and try to get people back on the same page of the current judging rules and standards. A paper form is the easiest to implement and track. It would be best to also offer this test online and make it update current CBJ status. This would be something for the technology committee.
DISCUSSION REGARDING IMPLEMENTATION DATE AND STAFFING ISSUES. HARWELL SAYS OPTIONAL ONLINE TEST WILL BE DONE NEXT MONTH. SIMMONS REFER ROLL OUT TO CBJ COMMITTEE. LIKES AN OPTIONAL TEST FOR 1ST YEAR. DO AN OPTIONAL ONLINE TEST FOR A YEAR BEGINNING 1/1/5 WITH SHOW TO MEMBERS AT ANNUAL MEETING IN DENVER. PETERS WILL TABLE MOTION PENDING RESULTS FROM CBJ COMMITTEE. 2ND PRESTON. PASSED.
PETERS MOVED TO TABLE CURRENT MOTION. 2ND PRESTON. PASSED.
Mike Peters: I make the following motion: KCBS change TOY bonus points from a maximum 50 points for contests with 50 plus teams to a maximum of 35 points for contests with 35 and more teams.
This year, the average team count as of 12/1/14 was 38.79 while taking out the contests under 25 teams, International contests and the AR Open. Of the 427 contests, 85 of these had 50 or more teams (19%). Teams chasing points for TOY will often skip local contests that might not get 50 teams for maximum point benefit and travel. Teams that would not normally chase points might possibly cook additional contests because they would have an equitable chance to finish in the top 25 in TOY placings. Both of these should help contests from canceling due to a lack of teams.
This suggestion was brought to me by a cook team. After asking a number of other cooks, the consensus was that this was a great idea to help local contests, help some mid level teams cook more to take advantage of TOY monies while also sending a message to struggling organizers that the BOD is instituting changes that benefit not only organizers but their local teams as well.
In reviewing the current TOY overall status, there are only 6 teams of the top 25 that have placed in the top 25 in each of the 4 meat categories and overall. 8 teams have only one or no top 25 category calls. This change should also reward the consistency of a cook team in the overall TOY standings and bring the TOY numbers closer at the end of the year.
Lohman: Discussion of release of Sam’s Club Tournament dates.
Weaver: Failed commitment of organizers to pay awards to cook teams.
Compton: Any needed discussion on the Wells Awards. Philanthropy web issue.
