Kim Collier: Hi all Randall Bowman and associate's are wanting to have an AM. Royal type of event. Basically using the same rules and set up of the Am. Royal.
So I am bring this to you attention so it can be discussed at the BOD meeting, where Randall and associates will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
His thoughts/request are below
The National BBQ Cup (Que'n in Cumming) that had for the past 5 years been in Cumming, GA in November every year (The weekend before Thanksgiving) will move its name to a new event in Nashville, TN on Memorial Day weekend. It will become an invitational and open (very similar to the American Royal format), it will be a friday/saturday for the invitational and the open will besaturday/sunday. All KCBS Grand Champions will be invited.
We will keep an event in Cumming,Ga on the same dates we have had in the past but will use the past tag line as the event name, Que'n in Cumming for 2016
Mark Simmons: I want to thank the members of the sanctioning committee for a productive year in 2015. We had the following people as committee members and each provided valuable input:

Mike Hays: The Marketing Committee met 1/11/16, all members were present, as well as Mike Peters. I gave them an update on the progress for the new merchandise store. All indications are that the new store will be live Friday morning, 1/15/16. The current store will be shut down at close of business Tuesday, 1/12/16, in order to facilitate the redirect of the IP address to the new site.
We discussed two areas of concern to focus on for 2016. The first being to come up with programs to help organizers market their contests to cook teams, potential sponsors, and the general public. The second area of concern was to address new membership as well as membership retention. Moving forward this year we will break these concerns down into more specifics and generate ideas to target these issues.
Please accept this report.
Wayne Lohman: The KCBS Board of Managers is pleased to announce two Regional International TOY Championships for Canada and Europe. Both Championships are identical to the US TOY with the following exceptions:
• The team head cook’s domicile determines his/her team’s region of eligibility.
• International TOY points will be awarded on the basis of each team’s top 5 highest point contests cooked in the contest year.
• US Teams and International Head Cooks living in the US are not eligible to be considered for the International TOY awards.
The IOTeam will leave on January 12th for the first International Contest of 2016. The Winter Extreme South Tyrol (W.E.S.T) is in Rein-in-Taufers, Italy located high in the Italian Alps. As of this writing, we have a maximum of 30 teams competing and 25 registered in a CBJ Class.
CBJ Committee Report:
Randy Bigler: The CBJ Committee met 15 December 2015. The discussion held was mainly on comment cards and whether they needed updated or not. The decision made was to get ideas from the KCBS members at the yearly banquet. A current comment card and letter will be put in each attendee's banquet packet asking for suggestions or ideas. We will also display a large copy of the comment card on an easel in the common area of the banquet facility with a container for them to drop their suggestion in. These suggestions and ideas will then be discussed at the next CBJ meeting.
The CBJ and CTC Manuals and CBJ Powerpoint presentation have been updated and sent to the office for distribution for the 2016 CBJ and CTC classes. The CTC Powerpoint is getting a final look and will also be ready for distribution by mid January.
Randy Bigler: The rep committee would like to make a motion to add two full new reps and 1 new rep in training in closed session.
KCBS Score Committee/Technology Committee
Dennis Polson: The Technology Committee met January, 5, 2016, members present were Dennis Polson chairman, Candy Weaver, Scott Grinstead, Stephen Smith, Bill Sheflett, Mike Peters, Carolyn Wells, and Karrin Murphy.
Scott reported that Score is correct on teams handout but are still some problems on website in a few cases. The problem is being worked on.
International website needs proper information listed. Example the country name.
The Committee recommends asking the Board for more money to get more time with the programmer to move projects along. There are several issues that need updating and added to our website.
I move to accept this report.
Sandy Fulton: December 29, 2015, Members on Conference Call: Mike Peters, Chris Peters, Carolyn Wells, Raye Keyes and Sandy Fulton
Absent: Barbara Richter
No updated report from MMA on sponsorships. As of November meeting there was $12,500 in sponsorships.
Chris Peters continues to secure door prizes. Will be doing follow up calls over the next week.
Trophies are ordered.
Raye reported that the 30th Anniversary pins have arrived.
As of the date of this meeting 321 people have registered for dinner. 263 people have paid. 77 Lifetime members have registered and 9 people have signed up for the Table Captain Class. Mike suggested that an E-Blast be done to the judges making them aware that this class will be held during the Banquet. There are 11 people signed up for the BBQ Crawl.
As of this meeting we have 10 volunteers signed up. There continues to be an ad in the Bullsheet asking for volunteers. Our feelings are that once people have arrived we will be able to get more volunteers.
We currently have 6 exhibitors signed up.
Wine glasses have been ordered for the Lifetime members. Per the request of the BOD additional glasses have been ordered for attendees to purchase. The glass and pin will be sold for $10.00.
The Banquet Committee will meet on Thursday, January 14th at 1:30 at the hotel to go over the program one final time. We will meet with the entire Board later in the afternoon to review their involvement in the program. Time will be decided based on Board member’s arrival at the hotel. Board members will receive an email advising them of time.
It has been an honor to Chair the 30th Anniversary Banquet Committee this year. I would like the minutes to show my sincere thanks to my co-chair, Barbara Richter, our onsite member Raye Keyes, Chris Peters for hard work and Carolyn and Mike for their guidance. It is my sincere hope that on Sunday morning all that were in attendance will be talking about how great the 30th Banquet was and the ones that didn’t attend will wish they had.
Sandy Fulton, Chairperson

Strategic Planning Committee
Bill Capstack: Our committee members are Bill Capstack (Chairman), Paul Kirk, Mark Simmons, Dennis Polson, Bruce Bubacz, Joe Otto, Mike Peters (President) and Carolyn Wells (Executive Director)
Our Committee met on December 21, 2015 and January 4, 2016.
• Permanent Home for KCBS:
We closed on the property on December 30, 2015 and are currently gathering property management proposals.
• KCBS History:
Carolyn has been exploring various avenues for documenting KCBS history using visuals, film, audio, etc. to document and interview folks who have been around since the beginning. In addition, the second and third generation members have valuable insights to share as to the growth of KCBS and the sport of barbecue. She believes this story will share the Americana aspect of the food group and that it will be worthy of sharing the sense of community within. This is an ongoing initiative.
2015 Strategic Planning Committee Accomplishments:
• Located and procured a new location for the KCBS headquarters.
• Updated all committee descriptions to enhance awareness and improve communications.
• Reviewed all prior board decisions for their origin, justification and continued relevance. Developed a database so that all board members may research this historical data on a timely basis.
• Developed procedures for collegiate-level Competitors Series events. The first event was held at the UMKC campus in Kansas City was a total success.
• Tailgating competition guidelines have been published.
• Ancillary category guidelines for steak, oysters, sausage, vegetables (vegetarian), hamburgers and desserts have been developed and published.
• Monitor the completion of the renovation for the new building.
• Relocate the current KCBS staff to the new facility.
• Secure tenant(s) for the new location.
• Review the By-Laws.
• Update committee descriptions.
• Finalize the procedures for establishing a collegiate division chapter.
• Finalize the rules governing the collegiate division.
• Explore the opportunity to sanction specialty contests/events for heirloom or super premium brands of proteins.
THANK YOU COMMITTEE MEMBERS FOR MAKING THIS A GREAT YEAR FOR KCBS!
We ask the board to accept our report.
Philanthropy Committee Report
Dave Compton: We have selected our winners for the Gary Wells and Carolyn Wells awards and these will be publicly announced at the Banquet. The application process is up and running for the Charitable Grants and KCBS Scholarship programs and we're expecting another bumper crop of applicants this year.
Our committee has started exploring ways to solicit donations for the KCBS Foundation. Some of these will include one-time gifts, recurring donations (weekly, monthly, etc.) and bequests.
We are also working on a handbook that will detail what we've done and where we're going as a committee so that any incoming Chair and committee won't come in blind as to what we do. This should be finished by the February Strategic Planning meeting.
Our Committee this year has consisted of myself as Chair, Mike Peters (President), Carolyn Wells (Executive Director), Dave Edyburn, Nancy Goldsmith, Raye Keyes and Candy Weaver.
I ask that the Board accept this report
TOY Ad Hoc Committee Report
Mike Peters: The TOY committee has met by phone and in a private Facebook group. The members include Mike Hays, Mike Richter, Richard Parker, Dan Hixon, Darren Warth, David Qualls, Brad Leighninger and Mike Peters.
The goal of this group was to come up with viable TOY options for KCBS.
The group discussed ideas and has come up with two plans to proceed with for data collection and analysis. The current TOY system would be in effect for 2016.
Both plans have multiple benefits which would be addressed going forward as data comes in.
The committee also looked at regions based upon where cook teams resided. We broke the teams into 5 regions and 10 regions. At the end of a set “season”, we would take the top teams from each region and have a true championship. Thoughts are a back to back competition with the 50 teams (top 5 or top 10 based upon regions) competing the first day with the top 24 teams advancing to the finals the second day.
The KCBS season would also need to change to finish in September or October.
Candy Weaver: I move to allocate funds (to be determined) to accomplish technology changes as special projects in order to get tasks, some already approved, completed in a timely manner.
Closed Session Agenda:
Randy Bigler: Rep issues
Candy Weaver: Discuss budget for technology improvements.
