An Open Letter From The Philanthropy CommitteeMarch 24, 2016
Dear KCBS Member:
We wanted to take a moment to remind you about the KCBS Scholarships and Charitable Grants available to members and their families. With the end of the school year approaching, it’s a great time to think about not only applying for these opportunities, but also contributing to the programs.
In terms of the KCBS Scholarships, the eligibility requirements are pretty simple and easy to follow:
First - Has one parent been a KCBS member in good standing for at least three years?
Second - Has the student maintained a minimum 2.5 GPA at the time of the application?
Third - Can the student obtain at least one letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor, teacher/professor, principal or other school official. Additional letters are welcome but we need at least one from the school.
Fourth - Can the student write a short essay describing their achievements and goals?
Four years ago, we had fewer than 25 applicants for KCBS Scholarships. Last year, we had exactly 60 students apply: some were first-time applicants, some were multi-year, some had siblings who were getting scholarships, all were students who has a parent that belongs to KCBS. Reading some of those applications makes us realize just what a wonderful group of children our members have raised!
Just think about this: if you have been a member for 10 years, you have paid in a total of $350 in dues. Most of our scholarship awards are between $500 and $1,000 per student, per year. Now, $500 doesn't pay a whole bunch of college, community college or trade school (yes, those count, too) but as a parent you know that every bit helps. It’s an amazing benefit that directly goes back to our members.
So parents, if you have a graduating high school senior or a college student in your family, let's get those applications in before March 31. Just go to the Philanthropy section of the KCBS website (www.kcbs.us/philanthropy) for more information.
Coming up April 29 is the deadline for our Charitable Grants applications. Each year, KCBS makes a limited number of Charitable Grants to organizations that fall under our Mission Statement of preserve, promote, teach and celebrate BBQ as America's cuisine and art form. Again, more information about the Charitable Grants program can be found on the website at www.kcbs.us/philanthropy.
Finally, be on the lookout for news concerning an upcoming fundraising drive that will benefit our philanthropic efforts. We're in the planning stages now and all of the donations will go to the KCBS Foundation, which means that 100% of your gift can be claimed on your tax form - a win-win for everyone!
Thank you for your time and your support of KCBS! Now let’s get those deserving students and organizations some much-needed funds!– The KCBS Philanthropy Committee
