BAD MOON SMOKIN STORMS THE COMPETITION IN MORRISApril 25, 2016
Morris was stop #5 on the OKBS Cleaver Team of the Year contest tour. This tiny town in Northeast Oklahoma commemorates the fateful day of April 24, 1984 when the town was devastated by a tornado. Celebrating its resilience and remembering the injured and those who lost their lives, Morris Twister Days has become a beloved community event filled with fun, faith and family. Along with live music, street vendors and lots of things for the kids to do, the Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event anchored the festivities.
31 teams filled the streets and alleyways of downtown Morris. Don Clark of Indian Territory Smoke, along with lots of help from Tabatha Evans of TNK BBQ, put on a Friday night fish fry potluck that is quickly become a yearly tradition. Tall tales, and the occasional hush puppy, were tossed around throughout the evening. KCBS Reps Ralph and Karen Williams made sure teams were tended to. From turn-in boxes all the way through awards, teams always know the contest will run smoothly when these two are on board.
A new Grand Champion emerged this year. OKBS member James Hendricks of Bad Moon Smokin, with the help of his daughter Bree, pulled in 2nd Place Chicken, 3rd Place Ribs, 6th Place Pork and 1st Place Brisket propelling him to a spot in the KCBS 700 Club with 704.5372 points overall and his first ever Grand Championship. The American Dream BBQ Team came in a close 2nd winning Reserve Grand Champion with 5th Place Chicken, 5th Place Ribs, 1st Place Pork and 5th Place Brisket. No strangers to the KCBS 700 Club, the Dream Team finished with 701.0972 points. 1st Place and a perfect 180 in Ribs went to Big Butts Need Rubbin' Too, and 1st Place Chicken went to Spicy Spit Fire.
Congratulations to everyone who heard their names in Morris. Next stop on the OKBS Cleaver Team of the Year Contest tour is the Bixby BBQ'n Blues Festival. 'Til then . . . keep on smokin!
