First Annual Smokin Trackside BBQAugust 16, 2016
The aromas of I-35 Speedway changed this past weekend, August 12 and 13, 2016. A normal aroma is the smell of racing fuel as the powerful engines of the racing machines take to the track on Saturday night. A new aroma permeated the track beginning Friday as the smell of brisket, chicken, ribs, and pork cooking in the smokers of various Kansas City Barbeque Society competitors invaded the track. The Smokin Trackside BBQ and Brew Bash was held at I-35 Speedway on August 12 and 13. Racing, BBQ, and Brew what can be more American?
Friday night events include music by AJ Gaither One Man Band, a fire performance from Sophie Sassafras, the Redneck Beer Tasting, and a People’s Choice BBQ event where each team voluntarily cooked 5 pounds of chicken wings sponsored to the track in a non KCBS sanctioned event. The wings were then taken to the Trackside Bar and Grill where the general public sampled the various cooked wings and voted for their favorite. Congratulations to Turn 2 Pit Crew for winning this very tight race by one vote over two other tied teams.
Saturday the seventeen Barbeque Competitors began turning in their brisket, chicken, ribs, and pork to the palates of the judges. As this event was a state qualifier barbeque competition the Grand Champion of the Smokin Trackside BBQ contest receives an automatic entry in the Jack Daniel’s World Championship and the American Royal Invitational BBQ contests. The American Royal Competition will also be held at a racetrack this year, Kansas Speedway.
Congratulations to the Smoking Hills earning the Grand Champion Award with a score of 706.846. Reserve Grand Champ Sublime BBQ was on their heels with a score of 700.606. In the four categories, Hunka Hunka Burnin' Rub was first in chicken, Smoking Hills was first in Pork Ribs and Pork, and Sublime claimed the first prize in brisket.
I-35 Speedway thanks Rich and Bunny Tuttle for being the KCBS representatives for this event and all the teams for participating. At the completion of the awards ceremony, I-35 Speedway owners Mike and Kyle Johnson announced they are looking forward to the second annual Smokin Trackside Barbeque on the same weekend in 2017.
