Board pledge:
Recognizing barbeque as America’s cuisine, the mission of the Kansas City Barbeque Society is to celebrate, teach, preserve and promote barbeque as a culinary technique, sport and art form.
I accept my duties as a KCBS director to further the KCBS mission so that truth, justice, excellence in barbeque and the American way of life may be strengthened and preserved forever.

Membership Requests to Address the Board:   None

Presidents Report:
Candy Weaver:  Hard to believe that it’s December already.  The 2019 Board has only two working meetings left in our term.  This meeting will certify the results of the membership vote on the approval of the sale of the KCBS building.  The boards that purchased and renovated this structure had a vision that never completely materialized.  This sale will give KCBS an opportunity with renewed purpose to ensure the KCBS mission continues forward.  There will be new projects ahead to bring Barbeque to the forefront of America’s cuisine.
Thank you to Mike and Chris Peters for their 12 year stint as the “BBQ Pitchman (and Vanna)” of the Tour.  Twelve years is a long, long time for a program of this nature and I appreciate their dedication to KCBS.
Last week, KCBS broke new ground on the execution of the Code of Conduct policy put in place last summer.  In years past, the KCBS Board would render punishment on alleged rule violations without giving a Member the right to defend their actions.  The first hearing was held under the Code on December 5th.  The board is now examining facts and will determine outcome.
I look forward to the KCBS Banquet in January!  Hope to see many of you there.

Minutes of Last Meeting
David Qualls: I move to accept minutes of the November 13, 2019 regular Meeting

The ambassador program Collection of high and low points has been complied and will be sent to Emily under a different file.  (Note From Last month)  Alan will send Emily the good points, the successes, who made good ambassadors, what were the problems and the short comings, so a KCBS formal program can be developed, budgeted.  Evaluations will be made going forward.  We will be putting on an Ambassador Review meeting at the banquet this year for the organizers and reps to expose them to the program

International Committee:
Wayne Lohman: The KCBS Flag has risen in South America thanks to the efforts of Daniel Lee and the Brazilian Pitmaster Association who hosted the first KCBS Sanctioned Contest in Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 30.  25 teams competed in the four-meat category with a lamb ancillary that was the highlight of the contest.  The winner of the lamb category was so excited that he proposed to his fiancé on stage, giving her a ring made from a piece of brisket.  Much to the surprise of the crowd, the winning team of the event, Churras de Patrao, is from the Amazon which is an area of few BBQ teams and events as well as little supplies and meat.
Kings BBQ Grills, a contest sponsor is the largest grilling and smoking equipment manufacture in Brazil who supported our contest event.  We spend an extra day touring their plant and visit a cattle farm that raised Wagyu beef which is readily available and inexpensive for competition.
We also identify 4 individuals from different States in Brazil that have a desire to be contest reps and have an established reputation in competition BBQ circles.  This could give us a big boost in sanctioning new contest throughout the country.
62 students attended the CBJ Class which is an indication that BBQ is definitely a popular food sport in South America.  While there we had the opportunity to discuss contests in Chile and Peru for the upcoming year.
The IOTeam first trip in 2020 is in January to Mexico for our first contest with several more to follow next year

Strategic Planning Committee:
The strategic planning committee, after the whole Board approval in the October meeting will start its work on a digital platform that has been set up and the first topics are on the list to work on.
The committee with its members, including our President and CEO is working on various topics on a digital platform. This gives every member the chance to work on topics whenever they can and so all the aspects can be worked out.
The Board from January on will be informed about the proceeding every two months and can decide how to proceed on the ideas.
The work of the Committee will consist of
  • Create a long-term strategic framework
  • Supporting the CEO and Board with strategic issues
  • Conduct research to determine do’s and don’ts
  • Yearly recalibrating framework
  • Proposing new ideas which would support goals
The results of the work of the committee shall be a plan for every topic to follow and preparing a general strategy for KCBS to follow for success in the upcoming years.
