Announcing 2020 Team of the Year Prize Payouts

Congratulations on another exciting and highly competitive barbeque season.  We look forward to celebrating everyone it takes to make this possible at our KCBS banquet; from the Cooks, Judges, Reps, Organizers, Staff and Volunteers.
 
This BBQ season has been defined by Passion. Some of the top cooks in the nation continued to find ways to compete; perhaps going to places they haven’t been before to ensure they could still compete for the coveted title of KCBS Team of the Year World Champion. With fewer opportunities to compete, each cook has counted even more to ensure they could still achieve top performance with fewer number of competitions! The Backyard teams have been fired up to compete for Backyard Chicken and Ribs Team of the Year titles!

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are pleased to announce the Kansas City Barbeque Society 2020 Team of the Year prize payouts. The total prize pool for the Team of the Year program will be $22,500.  This includes  bonus prize money provided by Smithfield Foods for Ribs and Pork in Master and Backyard Series. "With nearly 300 fewer contests than in a typical BBQ year, we are so proud of the teams who went head-to-head in more of the same contests this year. With fewer competitions, teams had to be even more competitive and didn't have as many chances to drop lower-scoring contests from their season. We also saw more contests with stacked fields, as top teams headed to similar contests to cook. We are pleased that we've been able to hold the payout similar to last year's $26,000, even with fewer contests," said Emily Detwiler, Chief Executive Officer. 
 
2020 marks the inaugural Backyard Series Team of the Year.  We will be awarding $2,500 in total prize money to those Backyard teams in Chicken and Ribs categories, including $500 in bonus prize money from Smithfield Foods.  We are also continuing to award TOY prizes for the winners of those who have competed in fewer contests, since we know it’s not possible for everyone to compete as often. Additionally, we will recognize our International Team of the Year winners.  Please see the breakdowns for each category listed below. 
 
Teams should review their current points status carefully on www.kcbs.us.  If you think you are missing any points or have any concerns about points, please contact Karrin Murphy at 1-800-963-5227 or toy@kcbs.us to discuss the need for any adjustments by 10/15/20.  Remember, your KCBS membership must be in good standing to receive Team of the Year points and awards.  Team of the Year Points are your top 10 highest scores. Please note, we will not accept any requests for adjustments after 10/15 to ensure adequate planning for the banquet on November 14th, 2020. 
 
We hope you will be able to join us for the banquet and awards on November 14.  The banquet will be November 14, 2020 at the Prairie Band Casino & Resort in Mayetta, KS (about 90 miles west of Kansas City).
