Eastern Beast BBQ is a KCBS competition team and boutique catering outfit founded in 2013 by Doug and Jenn Morton of Long Island, NY, with the support of a few close friends. Here's the story:
After years of cooking Cajun and Creole food, Doug got his first smoker as a birthday gift from his wife in 2008. Maybe it was 2009. Who cares. Either way, what was meant as a thoughtful gift instead opened a door into a life of shameless BBQ addiction. At first it seemed innocent enough -- a slab of baby-backs here, a few chicken thighs there. But chicken lead to brisket, pulled-pork, and St Louis cut ribs, and soon spiraled outward into the strange and delicious world of fatties, moinks and ABT's. The equipment started piling up. Doug would disappear for hours on end, scheming his way into restaurant supply depots or making back-alley deals in Brooklyn for 55 gallon food-grade steel drums.
When a tractor trailer from Shreveport, Louisiana showed up at their doorstep to deliver a 350-pound custom built competition smoker, maybe it was time for an intervention. When their backyard 'cues got bigger every summer and started requiring their own block-party permits, maybe someone should have stepped in. Soon, Doug had emptied the family bank accounts, pawned all of Jenn's jewelry and even sold one of his own kidneys for just one more Black Angus brisket and a filthy bag of Royal Oak lump charcoal... Okay, that last part is BS, but the rest pretty much sums it up.
Doug and Jenn love BBQ. They've shared that love with their friends and family. Now they want to share an ass-kicking on the KCBS BBQ competition circuit... and do a little catering to support their habit. I mean passion.
