SOUTHSIDE SMOKERS (AUSTRALIA)Year Started: 2013
Husband and wife, Matt and Margaret Vitale are foodies and barbecue enthusiasts. Before starting their legal careers, Matt and Margaret both worked in the hospitality industry, and ran a stall together at the Queen Victoria Night Market in 2007 selling Porchetta (Roman-style roast pork). Professional demands meant that their passion for food and barbecue was limited to backyard and family events, until they formed the Southside Smokers, to compete at a small barbecue competition held in conjunction with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in March 2013, which the Southside Smokers won.
As there had never been a competition of this kind in Australia before, the Southside Smokers were invited by the KCBS to compete at prestigious 25th Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue, in Lynchburg Tennessee (The Jack). In October 2013, the Southside Smokers performed extremely well at The Jack, finishing 10th in the Chef?s Choice category with their signature dish, Porchetta
