1. Please describe the skills you possess (which you believe are stronger than the
other candidates) which would make you an asset as a board member, in dealing with
the challenges facing KCBS, and give an example of how those skills would serve the
KCBS Board of Directors and its membership.

I believe that the 180+ cook-offs I have run over the year’s gives me a huge advantage as to what both teams and judge’s feel, want and need. No one running has as much experience in the BBQ community on a day to day basis as I do. As a current board member, I have learned the value of that. You must listen to members and be willing to take their concerns to the board for consideration.

2. If you are a Cook, Judge, Rep or Backyard Cook, please identify the major KCBS
issues concerning one of the areas in which you are involved. Describe the major issue,
your strategies to correct or improve the issue, and what you see as the biggest
challenge to the success of your plan.

I see the judging at contests as a major concern. The seating program still needs some work. I along with the rest of the board of directors have been working hard to improve that. With continuing work along with member input, I believe we can make the needed adjustments for the seating and judging programs.

3. Identify your major short term goal and the major long term goal, if elected to the Board of KCBS and your plan to implement change or improvement in order to carry out each of these goals.
I believe that the changes being made over the past few years a have been positive and need more work to complete transitions. The projects in place will greatly impact most of the members in very positive ways. I have put a lot of time, effort and work into some of these projects and would very much like to see these thru. The need for change is great and to make these is an involved and lengthy process. I am not a quitter in anything I do and would love the opportunity to work for most of the members. Judging aspects have begun to take on changes to better the experience but there are more changes needed and this needs to be a focus.
We need to find ways to take the focus on the “Fun” aspect of what we do, we need to protect the majority in our society and not only focus on the very small percentage that seem to always be the main focus.

4. If elected please explain, “your level of commitment, time and energy” for committee projects and monthly reports, board meetings
and attendance, as well as representing KCBS to the public and being responsive to our members. Please understand that
“whatever time is required” is not an acceptable answer. Executive Committee members typically volunteer 8-10 hours a month
and Committee Chairs typically volunteer 3-5 hours a month. “No Report” often means no activity. Will you be an active board
member or inactive board member?

As a current board member, I know it take many hours each week working with the executive committee as well as committee members. As the current Vice President, I am very dedicated to the task at hand. I find myself every day working of board tasks as I’m sure all the active board members do. Spending 20+ hours a month is probably a safe estimate of my current involvement.

5. What new ideas would you have in regards to marketing or new ideas that would benefit membership?
I believe we need more perks for the members to continue to grow membership. Adding more value to the membership is important. After spending time at the Hearth Patio and BBQ Show I see many areas where we can expand our relationships. I think we also need to look at new products for the GAC tour.

6. Please describe your previous participation in KCBS activities and years of experience.
I am a current board member, executive committee member and have been a member for 20 years of KCBS. I started as a cook and fell in love with BBQ. I judged a few contests and soon noticed that there was a place for a professional coordinator and started the Original Nashville Shores BBQ Cook-off. I have now run contests from coast to coast!

7. Please explain why you want to be a member of the KCBS Board of Directors.
BBQ has been a huge part of my life for 20+ years. Because I am involved in so many contests around the country I feel I have a good sense of what is going on in the BBQ world. During the time I have been on the board I have learned how important it is to make yourself available to members and discuss matters that are close to them. It is also crucial you have the time to spend on committees so you can be an active voice in making the changes members would like to see. I have spent many hours doing so and I would love to be a board member to continue the current projects we have going for the 2019 season. It is going to be an exciting time.
