KCBS Judge Requirements

Requirements to become and maintain the status of a KCBS Certified Barbeque Judge (CBJ)
 
  1. To become a CBJ
    1. One must be 16 years of age or older.
    2. Must take the KCBS CBJ class (one must be 15 years or older to take the class).
  2. To maintain CBJ status one must be a member in good standing with KCBS.
If a CBJ has not continued to maintain his/her CBJ status because of not being a KCBS member for a lapsed time of 12 months or more. This person must first reactivate their KCBS membership, then pay and attend a CBJ class before receiving the status of an active CBJ in good standing.

Requirements to become and maintain the status of a KCBS Master Certified Barbeque Judge (MCBJ)
  1. You must receive 30 signatures from Contest Rep
    1. The contest must have the 4 KCBS meats of Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork  Shoulder, and Brisket to be considered as cooking with a Team.
    2. These credits should be recorded on the CBJ Contest Verification From in the back of the CBJ manual or from the KCBS.US website in your membership profile in the Judge Portal under the Judge Forms.
    3. KCBS Sanctioned, Competitive, or Backyard (Amateur) Contests can be used to obtain credits with the following exceptions.
      1. In cases where a judge participates the same day in multiple events at the same contest, a maximum of one credit (signature) will be provided per contest. (Example: a sanction contest, followed by a backyard.)
      2. Extra Categories, Ancillary Contests, i.e. (anything butt, wings, dessert contest, etc.) CANNOT be used to obtain credits.
    4. At least, one of the 30 signatures and not more than 10 signatures must be as a volunteer.
      1. A volunteer assignment is a duty assigned by a Rep within the judging area. Duties can include Table Captain, Turn-in table, left-over table, help with other duties, etc...
      2. A CBJ working a duty other than judging will receive the lettering of "V" by the Rep's name after their signature
 
  1. Cook with a team at a contest (that you are not judging),
    1. It is highly recommended that you cook with a team prior to your 15th contest.
    2. If a CBJ is also a competitor (has a cook team or is member of a cook team) this will count as cooking with a team.
    3. The Master Judge Team Verification form must be completed by the Head Cook.
  2. A copy of the completed Master Judge Team Verification form and a copy of the completed CBJ Contest Verification form with Reps signatures must be mailed to the KCBS for verification. (Do not mail the original completed forms.)
  3. After forms have been received and verify the CBJ will be send an online test.
  4. The CBJ must receive a score of 90+ out of 100 on the KCBS Master Test.
  5. To maintain MCBJ status one must be a member in good standing with KCBS.
    1. If a MCBJ has not continued to maintain his MCBJ status because of not being a KCBS member for a lapsed time of 18 months or more. This person must first reactivate their KCBS membership, then pay and attend a CBJ class before receiving the status of an active CBJ in good standing.
Requirements to become and maintain the status of a KCBS Certified Table Captain (CTC)
  1. To become a CTC one must 16 years of age or older.
  2. Must take the KCBS CTC class (One must be 15 years or older to take the class)
  3. One does not have to be a CBJ to be a CTC.
  4. To maintain CTC status one must be a member in good standing with KCBS.
    1. If a CTC has not continued to maintain his/her or her CTC status because of not being a KCBS member for a lapsed time of 18 months or more. This person must first reactivate their KCBS membership, then pay and attend a CTC class before receiving the status of an active CTC in good standing.
CBJ Recognition of 100+ contests will be for those who have met the following criteria.
  1. A judge must be a member in good standing for each contest that is counted for 100 plus
  2. Must be a Master CBJ
  3. Must use the Form from the from the KCBS.US website in your membership profile in the Judge Portal under the Judge Forms.
    1. For Contest that occurred before June 1, 2013, a CBJ may list the sanctioned contest they have participated in. with Rep's Name if know on the form.
    2. For Contest that occur after June 1, 2013, a CBJ must have the actual Rep Signature
    3. Each line on the form must be completed including the Reps signature
    4. Judging, working as a Table Captain or other assigned duties as determined by the KCBS Rep will count.
  4. A copy of the completed form must be mailed or emailed to membership@kcbs.us for KCBS verification.
    1. (Do not mail the original completed form)
Recognition will be a 100+ CBJ pin and your name posted on KCBS.US under "100+ icon".
