CBJ Committee Report:
Dennis Polson:     KCBS CBJ Committee Meeting Minutes June 24, 2019  7:30 pm (CDT)
Present: Dennis Polson, Chair; Linda Polson, Recording Secretary; Jon Amedei, Marge Plummer, Frank Gonzales, Ralph Williams, Alan Rothrock, Maxine Kilgore, Carl Parrish, and Becky Johnson.
Dennis opened the meeting and Frank provided an update & reported that there continues to be 86 teams who have signed up to work with MCBJ candidates.  Frank said he has received several requests from CBJs at contests for the list of Cook Teams.  Dennis said that when contacted by CBJs, he provides names and phone numbers of cook teams in area where the CBJ would like to cook but not additional information. Dennis cautioned committee members not to give out more information than that due to confidentiality concerns.
Dennis reviewed the BOD discussion about rules for participation of non-CBJ judges during a contest and whether Contest Reps should be allowed to consult judges concerning scoring during the judging process.
Maxine & Marge provided the committee with the survey for Organizers about encouraging cooks to register for contests earlier to facilitate correct number of judge participation at contests. The survey form will be tweaked slightly & then sent to organizers. The committee will then consider developing a similar survey for cooks.
The Master Certified Table Captain criteria, test, signature form, etc. were discussed.
The committee discussed KCBS recommendation for judges cleansing their palates between samples, which is emphasized in CBJ classes and by Reps at Judges meetings during contests.
The meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm. The next meeting will be July 29th at 7:30 pm.

Rep Committee
Randy Bigler:  The Rep Committee met on June 4th. In attendance was Lynda Voth, Nancy Mueller, Haymo Gutweniger, Mike Winter. The discussion held was on the use of campers by Reps. We are still discussing this issue and will have a response made at the next meeting.
All reps were invited to attend 1 of the 4 sessions of 2nd Quarterly Rep Conference Call. The main topics discussed were issues with the seating program which are being worked out with assistance from Park Road.
The reps began using the seating program on 28 June with a reminder to make sure to take their  random draw chips with them just in case there was an issue.
Reps were inquiring if the Rep, Judge and Organizer critiques will be put back onto the website.
Reminders were also discussed that the new yearly pins and the new flag pins are now $5 all others are still $3.
Questions arose on whether or not the Rules Committee has made a final decision on the foreign object in box. (Specifically foil and rubber glove pieces).
There was a discussion on the CABO WABO and Turkey contest. How are the KCBS Sanctioned contest selected to participate in one of these additional ancillary contest? Are there any directions to the reps repping these contest on how and what they are to perform? I have asked First Club Marketing to send the information to all the reps and to also send the schedule of the contest to Kim Collier at the KCBS office.
The 3rd Quarter Rep Conference Call will happen the last week of September.

Technology Committee
David Qualls:
Work continues on the Score software in which most all updates are complete.  The New Judges module in the website are complete and work is underway on various features and architecture to make the system more user friendly and easier to navigate.  The Committee consensus is that at some point soon, the Board is needs  to discuss a more conventional "Front End" website that works with the "Platform" we were forced to convert to prematurely which has caused much confusion and dissatisfaction by the Membership.
I ask that you accept this report.

Event Committee:  *Note: Event Committee is charged with Banquet, Invitational, Team of Year, and Great American Cookout
Randy Bigler: The Event Committee met in June, in attendance were Candy Weaver, KCBS President, Myron Berry, Richard Fergola, Carolyn Wells and Sandy Fulton.
First Issue discussed was the KCBS Invitational Contest: as you are aware KCBS has changed there year. The year will start 1 November 2019 and end 31 October 2020. We are in discussion to find a location to have our event and Dallas, TX area. The dates discussed are Nov 8-9 2019 or Nov 29-30, 2019. To be qualified for this contest the team will have to have won a Grand or Reserve Grand Championship at a KCBS sanctioned event.
Second Issue discussed was the KCBS banquet: The banquet will be held at the Argosy Hotel and Casino in Kansas City on the weekend of January 18, 2020. The menu will be determined by Richard Fergola, Carolyn Wells, Karrin Murphy and Kim Collier. The committee is looking for ideas from the members for things you would like to have at the banquet. Please send emails to,  rbigler@kcbs.us with your thoughts and ideas.
A brief discussion was held on Team of the Year program. We are looking for sponsors for each of the 4 meat categories. Smithfield has signed on as the sponsor for the Pork Ribs and Pork categories. Richard is checking into a chicken sponsor. If you know of someone that would like to be a brisket sponsor please have them notify KCBS office or the committee.
Rules Committee
Candy Weaver:  The rules committee met on 7/2 with a small agenda.  All members were present.
On request to have another team member be head cook for that contest, the answer is no.  However, that team member may modify the name and cook under his KCBS member number.
Rewording the foreign object rule:
I move that for the KCBS Rules in 2020, the following change be made for foreign object(s) found in an entry box. If a foreign object is discovered during appearance judging, a 1 is given by all judges for appearance, taste and tenderness. If foreign object is discovered by judge(s) during eating, the rep will instruct judge(s) to score the entry 1 for appearance, taste and tenderness. Other CBJs score as usual.
General discussion about disappearing contests, minimal prize pots, teams quitting and the excessive cost of competing, including cost of meats.
KCBS is experiencing fewer contests and teams in many area of the country.  Understanding the reasons vary, there are some common reasons shared by teams that have resigned or cut back:
- Expense of meat
- Expense of travel
- Steak / Backyard can be done in one day.
One way to expand interest in Backyard or Competitor contests would be to allow teams scores from these contest to count towards TOY for the individual meats cooked in that contest. The caveat to allowing this is that the rules for the Master series must apply to each meat for it to be eligible for TOY points:
- Wood or charcoal only
- Size of shoulder or butt
- Meat inspections
- Turn-in and judging procedures
Also, to get CBJs for non-Master Series, allow so many of the 30 required contests to be a Backyard (maybe 2) or Competitor (maybe 3) competitions and count as judging, not volunteering. If this diminishes the experience level too far, increase the total competitions to 35.
Other ideas discussed were dropping brisket entirely.
The Guinea Pig concept where organizer provides meats used.
Why steak cook offs are so popular.
