KCBS Announces Johnny Trigg Shootout for 2022

Johnny Trigg Shootout coming to Texas barbeque competitions for 2022
Honoring legendary Texas pitmaster Johnny Trigg, “the Godfather of Barbeque”

The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) is pleased to announce the Johnny Trigg Shootout, a series of Master Series barbeque cook-offs throughout Texas in honor of legendary pitmaster, Johnny Trigg. A Texas native, Johnny Trigg is considered the “Godfather of Barbeque” and has made a significant impact on competition barbeque within the state of Texas and across the entire United States of America.

Johnny has been competing in KCBS-sanctioned contests as team “Smokin’ Triggers” around the U.S. since 1991; racking up countless trophies and being the first pitmaster to ever win the Jack Daniel’s Invitational contest twice! Johnny appeared on three seasons of Destination America's “Barbeque Pitmasters” television show, alongside some of the most decorated pitmasters in the country. Johnny was inducted in the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2012.  He has mentored and challenged pitmasters who love to learn from him and still compete alongside him.

To honor Johnny, the Johnny Trigg Shootout will include a series of 5-10 KCBS sanctioned barbeque cook-offs throughout Johnny’s home state of Texas. Pitmasters throughout Texas and surrounding states will compete in KCBS sanctioned contests for a chance at additional prize money, trophies and the honor of being named the Johnny Trigg Shootout champion. KCBS member pitmasters will receive points for their performance at each of the cook-offs within the Johnny Trigg Shootout.

“Johnny has had a significant impact on the sport of competition barbeque,” says Emily Detwiler, CEO of the Kansas City Barbeque Society.  “Pitmasters young and more seasoned look up to Johnny and aspire to have the success he’s had. They also love seeing him at contests. Being crowned the Johnny Trigg Shootout champion will bring a tremendous amount of bragging rights and respect!”

“BBQ is my passion. I love to cook competition BBQ and it means so much to me,” said Johnny Trigg. “I’ve cooked and made friends around the world. I’ve cooked coast to coast and from Canada to Mexico. I’ve made friends around the country and the world, cooking in Switzerland and for the troops in Kuwait! I still love to go! It means so much to me to be able to cook. I’m so honored to have this shootout come together.”

KCBS will track the pitmasters’ points across contests within the Johnny Trigg Shootout using our Team of the Year points system. Participating pitmasters must be members of KCBS to receive points in the Johnny Trigg shootout series. They can easily register at www.kcbs.us prior to competing. Johnny will be on hand at cook-offs within the series to get the pitmasters fired up!
